After Season opener scheduled for Monday April 24th and Home Opener scheduled for Wednesday April 26th I'm pleased to report that BLUE remains undefeated thus far!  Guess you guys aren't missing me in the lineup!

2017 Season

Carroll County Blue will begin their 24th season on Monday April 24th at Harford.  Blue's first home game will be played at our CC Sports Complex on Wednesday April 26th while hosting Silver.

Now, if only I can find the words to properly describe this great group of personalities. Twenty men of various backgrounds have joined to form solidarity of purpose in functioning as one. Each unique but sharing the common bond of fellowship and pursuit of a Championship. Our faith and trust and support of each other is proving to be a formula for our success. Fun first, but winning beats the alternative.


Epilogue April 2017
Now after eight years, Tinker can no longer remember where he misplaced his catlike reflexes, blazing speed on the base paths and prolific power swing (you remember all those hits over the second basemen's out stretched glove-right?).  It is with sadness in my heart that I have retired from playing, being the custodian of Team funds and also authoring for this, Blue's site. To this day, having played with 50 +/- teammates, my original sentiments still ring true.  It has been a great ride wherein I have been blessed to form many friendships, not only with teammates but with so many great competitors. Hopefully, a younger Bluesman will step forward to continue Blue's website.  From my inaugural season with, Harry, Larry, Pete, Mike et.al. to
cameo players such as Ivory, Tim, et.al., my reminiscent memories, given my loquacious propensity, would bore you, but I count them all my friends. For the benefit of R'Nealius and Shorty et. al., this is my penultimate post as I will attempt one last post of photos dear to my heart.  My Best Wishes for Blue's continued success!

June 1 Games At Harford

Before I get to the game play I wish to describe the setting:  Playing on Harford Community College's field has always been one of the hottest trips, playing on the hardest infield in the League if not the country.  Now for today's games....Blue started hot in game one by taking the lead for the first three innings but then Harford's bats came alive providing them with an 18 to 4 victory.  How do you beat a team when they score 18 runs?  You score 20 runs in the second game to garner a Blue win 20-18.  My batting kudos today go to Hank (3 hits) Ken (3 hits) and Fred with a couple but most importantly a crucial runs producing triple. Fielding kudos to Ron D & as always Jerry B....now if only we can convince our outfielders not to play so deep!  We have some of the sweetest swinging left handers in Fred, Guy, Dave, Jr., Ken and Murph as they look effortless and smooth in their swings (reminiscent of Oscar (O)-one of the best) who all had hits today. .Edits are required of my last posting as it was brought to may attention of some misinformation that I posted.
The first two Home Runs of the season are to be credited to Fred P. (Fred, please appreciate my remembrance of this as I sit here with my toe in ice water absorbing liquid pain killer).  Let's keep the bats alive and tighten up our "D".

Game and Season Recap Thus Far

Today was my inaugural game day, so I apologize for lack of postings.  To me, it was great to be back in the company of all teammates (gentlemen and friends)!  As I drove home from the games and pondered what I might script, I passed a farm  named "Quiet Solace".  Friends, Blue split with Greenbelt today bringing our record to 2 and 8.  Game one saw Blue's bats come alive to include our first homer of the season, compliments of the Reverend Jim P.  I did offer to retrieve the O2 tank but being the sturdy Navy guy he refused!  Game two was like Jeckall and Hyde, as we only needed to score 14 runs in the last inning, alas, loss #8.  My choice for player of the game goes to Jerry B. for his stellar outfield play!  Runner-up goes to Chance (Hank Z) for taking one for the team as he sped around first to take second base while absorbing a throw in the middle of his back (Ain't bad for a man in his 8th decade)!  My thanks to Dave K. for substituting his legs for mine when I was spent after legging it to 2B.
Now for "Quiet Solace":  Prior to the start, we had a team "pep talk" and the Rev. Jim's words echo in my memory (what's left of it); we are here to enjoy fellowship of all the men, we back each other, and have to remember we are playing Senior Softball. Ergo, QUIET SOLACE.
For the truth of the matter:  It is Gut Check Time for every Bluesman!  We must ask ourselves, one and all, what can we individually do to improve.  We are the oldest average age team in "A" division and thus some skills have deteriorated so we have to play smarter, i.e.  (In the immortal words first spoken by our former teammate Neal H., which were repeated today, know the game situation and what to do if the ball is hit to you).  I truly believe that we have the abilities to play better than .200!  Let's get it together!  Perhaps after reading my epistle I will not be so warmly welcomed at our ensuing games, but hey, I'm old, tired, retired and just want the best for BLUE!  Winning is fun!

Sad News

It is with a heavy heart that I post  the tragic news that Peggy Myers passed away last night.  As the wife of Carroll County Gray's manager, John, she was a dedicated fan, supporter, score book keeper and CC Gray's blog site reporter.  Her final post was on Monday and I'm certain that she was headed home to script and post Wednesday's game results when she was critically injured in an automobile accident. Prayers go out to the Myers family.

2015 Transitional Season Recap

With a turnover of 40% of a team's roster, due to retirement, challenges were
destined for Carroll County Blue in 2015.  The top three hitters in 2014 found
it necessary not to return: Mike B, RNH (aka R'Nealius), #9 (aka Tinker)
and #22, (ALS), who  had to bow out for shoulder surgery).
"Tony F "found it prudent to attend to family health
matters while Pete M  and Mike P considered 12 years enough.

Blue was fortunate to acquire the likes of Jim H., Jim J.,  Dennis, Keith, Bruce and Larry
to fill the void, but it takes time to gel as a cohesive unit.  While there were highlights
to the season, such as providing Dundalk with their first loss after their perfect 214 season,
the up and down play of Blue yielded a 18-24 record.  A tough one run loss in the
bottom of the seventh in tourney game one was disappointing as was our second game
loss when we just couldn't overcome our deficit in the 7th.

The future for Blue looks bright as the "rookies" have now become re-acquainted with their
softball skills of yore.
The Blue tradition of family first (biological then team), camaraderie, and production with all contributing will
continue!

Coming Out Day

So good to be back on the field with Blue today who played error free ball with passion like days of old in the first game.  As 6.9 was ailing, I had the opportunity to have Jr. to my left and Woody to my right.  After the third stellar infield play by Jr. it reminded me of the Rock Opera "Tommie" by the Who when I heard someone exclaim "Tommy Who?'!  Just a little jab Tom as you didn't provide me with a sandwich!  Blue snapped their losing streak by defeating Carroll Gray 8-3 in game one.  A certain SS went 2 for 2, squared.  The attendance for today's doubleheader was 20,099, of which One was of paid attendance (Shortie).  Game two saw a rotation of Blue players as we were of full complement minus only Guy and Larry.  Unfortunately the Gray team turned the tide on Blue by
winning 11-8. Being a tad bit rusty, Jr. has offered me some base running tips!  The Calvary returned and the tide has turned..........next up, Harford on Monday.

Catonsville Game

Due to my absence I have not been updated, so I have no summary to report. So, here's to a friend:  

Once upon a time
Blue had a player, 6.9
His glove improved and moved his feet
The speed which he ran was deemed fleet

With his progress, he earned 6.95
As he was rapping all a line drive
Left or right, hitting were his fortes
I suspicion, he goes both ways!

With passage of time he gained replevin
And now is adorned with number seven
The burden he bears is quite a big deal
He must live up to the former #7, Neal

He used to orate to give many a tickle
But aging has him now playing with his pickle
With balancing that act and playing ball
Someday 6.95 should be enshrined in the HALL!

Tom is now leading not only the Blue team, but the League and probably Softball Nation in the number of sandwiches he devours beginning in game one through the ten minute break and second game.  BTW Liverwurst is one of his favorites!

The Glory Days

On Monday June 1, 2015, Carroll County's Senior Softball founder was recognized, honored, roasted and toasted with the retirement of his uniform number #1 at Maggie's Restaurant during the annual teams' dinner.

The occasion called for a toast and ROAST so Tinker was chosen to emcee the event.

During the celebration, Harry's wife, Janet, was called upon to dress Harry with the ceremonial "Harry #1 uniform shirt" crafted by Evers and presented with the www.carrollcountyseniorsoftball.blogsite.com memorabilia booklet by Chance,  our now antediluvian teammate.

The entire contents of Tinker's speech was acknowledged by Harry to be true!

Harry Griffith #1 - "What About Harry"

It was ten years post George Orwell's "1984", that is 1994, when Harry Griffith, with his love for softball, took upon himself to establish a Senior Softball team for Carroll County.  Harry approached Farmers and Merchants Bank with a proposition to donate and provide "Seed Money" to sponsor a team.  With sponsorship secured, Harry assembled a team of 60 year olds and over to form the very first Carroll County Senior Team.  Although the team's first year record ended 4-20,  Carroll County was on their way to greater accomplishments.  Harry Griffith  was awarded the "Sportsmanship Award" in 1994.

On Monday, June 1, 2015, during the annual teams' banquet, the patriarch of Carroll County Senior
Softball, Harry Griffith, was toasted and "roasted" during the program where his #1 Jersey was retired.  Tinker (Greg) was the emcee and along with his teammates Evers (Mel) and Chance (Hank), Harry was presented with his retirement Jersey and the remaining original team members in attendance  (Henry Litchfuss, Chip Baginski and Carl Reed) were called forth to be recognized.

Upcoming Event

There were no games scheduled this week to allow for aching muscles to rest.  Anticipation is building for the game on Monday June 1st when Carroll Blue and Gray meet.  The day should be filled with friendly rivalry and will conclude with the annual Teams' Dinner to be held at Maggie's Restaurant.  The word is not on the street yet but there will be a few surprises in store for Monday's activities. TWBBIU&HGUNWBR. (Ponder that cryptic cipher).  Hope to have a great crowd turnout.

5 and 9

My field reporter states that Blue dropped two to Harford Wednesday, 19-14 and 17-5.  The only mention was that Dave K hit the daylights out of the ball.  There is one week to rest until Blue meets Gray on Monday June 1 which is also the date of our annual teams' dinner with spouses and/or significant others at Maggie's.  Special night with alumni and speaker in attendance.

Howard Red Game

Given the scores of Howard Red 10-0 and Howard Red 8-3 today, I have counseled with
Harry & Neal and we may have to suit up!  Hit 'em where they ain't boys!  Better luck on Wednesday as you travel to Harford.  To my fellow BHO2 friend, don't let 'em get through your legs as it's not a direct snap student body right run play!!!!!!!

Shocking News

Having relied on the Baltimore Beltway Senior Softball League website today, I saw where Blue lost two games to the "B" Division Shockers (1-5) 18-8 and 20-8.  I was remiss in not verifying the results and panicked by sending a message to a couple of my retired teammates enlisting them to join me in returning to Blue to help them save face.  The true result was that Blue took both games from the Shockers bringing their record back to .500.  Way to go BLUE!

Bowie Silver Home Date

On a clear sunny and warm day Silver trekked to Carroll County. with a perfect 6-0 record. Game one saw Mike S. take the mound to garner the win.  For game two, Blue pitched Jim J. and if not for two innings of infield errors he perhaps would have notched his first win.  After hammering Silver in the first game with 20 runs Blue scored only 12 in the second game.  Freddie P. lead all Blue in RBI's, rookie Larry M. led the team with 3 walks and ole 6.95 Tommy H. led the team in devouring three sandwiches (Phyllis:
I like Braunschweiger as well but with a slice of cheese and mayo)!  Silver's shortstop,  Maris hit a prodigious shot to deep center being only the third player to hit one over the fence, albeit aided by a 35 mph wind gust.  Being the investigative reporter, I did verify by phone that Any Zitney of Red hit one and Chuck Creswell of Harford hit two in one 2009 game. I did find it difficult to be the spectator today, especially when my former dear friend, Chance told me to get off the bench if I wasn't in uniform (there went your fresh veggie garden delights this season Hank). Guess I should attend the next game in uniform.  The team spirit seemed a tad bit lighter today and once the rookies blend with the aged vets I think Blue will gel and make a run for the roses. As always, Yasuko had an error free day in keeping the books (how is it Hank that she can be on the bench not in uniform??????????).

Home Opener

On this chilly morning,  Blue gathered to host Gray with the "Ladies On The Hill" adorned in parkas and fleece, all wrapped in their stadium blankets.  Also in attendance were  multifarious conversazione (i.e. Blue and Gray Retirees).  The retirees, twelve in total, did lay a quarter on the table to challenge the winners but we had no takers.  Given the absence of two rookies and one vet (on golf outings- where are their priorities?) and two rookies playing with the accustomed first year leg ailments and a vet requiring runners the forecast was dismal.  Quote of the day:  "Not many games are won when you don't score any runs", saith O.  The first game was a true pitching duel until the 6th inning with Gray prevailing 7-0 (even if all of Blue's hits had been homers the outcome would have been the same).  Game two was nip and tuck for the first four innings but culminated in a Gray victory 19-6.  I understand that my good friend Evers was so disconsolate that he sought dining with five women as opposed to teammates after the game.  Now as a casual observer, I wish to share my thoughts on Blue's game:  Chance exhibited his 40 millimeter leap to snare a line drive, Yasuko did not once shout "Hit De Ball Jim" and the team needs to play looser (Tommy tried to carry the load as the joker but he needs someone else to step up).  I wasn't surprised when the wind kicked up and there was a distinctive smell of Ben-Gay coming from the Blue dugout.   Blue, come home Wednesday with two victories so you'll be back to .500 !

Season Opener

Blue traveled to Dundalk to take on last year's undefeated team.  Game one went to 8 innings with Blue finally succumbing by a score of 12-11.  That first taste of defeat aroused Blue as they bounced back to take game two 17-4 breaking Dundalk's perfect record.  Tinker has relied on his on field reporter who only furnished this information:  Mike pitched both games, Woody played a stellar third base and
Hank went 8 for 8, all line drives down the right field line! This coming Monday has Blue playing Carroll Gray at home.........should be exciting!

2015 Season

We are three weeks away from the season opener.  First outdoor practice is scheduled for Monday April 6th.  As Blue lost five players to retirement, eleven year vets Pete and Mike, along with last year's leading hitters, Blum, Hoffman and Fridinger, and Al (#22) on the DL, it is a year of reloading.  Blue has added nine new players and as soon as I have the opportunity to visit the Post Office to get their pictures I'll add their names (as well as AKA's), mug shots and uniform numbers (all youngsters). I'm told Blue has added "Rifle Arm" to the outfield, "Soft Hands, Light Fingered Louie" to the infield and "Crazy Leggs Cowan" for his speed. Old #9 has opted to remain on the roster for when the rookies deplete the team with their first year hamstring and groin pulls, Achilles sprains, Rotator Cuff strains and all the other assorted ailments.  My wish is that they avoid the first year jinx but in case I'm coaxed out of retirement I hope Crazy Leggs Cowan stays together to be my substitute legs as my designated runner, Neal, is now retired.

2014 Celebratory Goals

I have decided to post this blog which first appeared on April 7, 2014 as we were about to embark on this year's season. Dreams can come true!


Prior to our first outdoor practice we need to envision what we want to accomplish this year:

Win One For The Gimper

Could it possibly be a Carroll County Championship year?  Today's results after Howard Red bombed Harford 18-5 and Blue finally defeated Gray 12-9 will showcase Blue on Wednesday against the winner of the Red versus Gray game at 10 a.m on Wednesday at Cedar Lane.  Blue needs one more win while their opponent will need to play at least two if not three games to garner the championship.
As for today's recapitulation I will succinctly state that Blue's outfield had a superb game and our pitcher Mike S., although not a Don Larsen performance, commanded the game.  Kudo's to my dear friend Hank (Chance) for his hitting and speed on the base path (keep buying the tickets for your wife and family to sit in the stands as you excel {Hot Dog} when they are in attendance). The defensive gem goes to Freddie P. for his catch while performing an acrobatic leap for which I gave him a score of TEN!  With TH (6.95) shelved from dining on Chinese, Tinker was back at home at short with Evers to his right and Chance stationed at First Base.  There were several crucial plays today and one stands out in my memory, in my memory, in my memory (oh no am I approaching that age?), and that was when Jr. (Casey) opted to insert a pinch hitter--------WAY TO GO Dave K!, crucial line drive hit!
To TH (6.95), I suggest you eat only Italian tonight and tomorrow so that you are ready to go Wednesday and bring your chef with you to cheer us on to the Championship. I have to mention that Blue's performance today may have been inspired by the pregame email sent to the team from our beloved scorekeeper -- Thanks Yaskou!  To succinctly expound upon this Post's Heading, we need to win it for our Gimpy (Gimper) #2, R'Nealius, as all he wants for Christmas is a trophy (and a little bit more red hair on his crown).  Succinct (ly)......I keep forgetting to look up the definition of that word,
but I promise by the end of my playing days I will have it down.  Come on guys let's "git" it done as I, like Neal, want to go out a winner.

BBSSL Tournament March

Disregard the Mamas & Papas tune "Monday Monday" and Elvis' "Heartbreak Hotel" as I have just received an email from a loyal follower and an Oracle (a former Bluesman) proclaiming that we (BLUE) are Desperadoes with a Peaceful Easy Feeling who will Take It To The Limit.  I can't Tell You Why but I no longer Sit on Pins and Needles, confident of accomplishing our goal ahead.  Thanks

First Day Tournament REFLECTIONS

I will reflect on today's outing, being the lunatic that I am, in my abstract fashion.  Blue traveled to Centennial Park, Red's home field #1, (the site of several Blue's heart breaking championship defeats over the years) to play Catonsville.  On the eve of this game I mused over Credence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising" perhaps because it was a Super Moon night, or perhaps our team's lack of luck this year, or perhaps it was what I cooked for dinner.  Nonetheless Blue "Took It To The Limit" and prevailed in game one 15-6.  Our second game opponent, the perennial champs, Howard Red, witnessed the final three innings of our game all the while salivating and chomping at the bits to get to us. As I spoke with a few Red's prior to the game I had another thought...."Life In The Fast Lane" and we're in for "The Long Run" as I saw blood thirst in their eyes, (I can't attribute those thoughts to my between games snack as my banana had turned to mush so I only drank Kool-aid).  Jr. had posted his usual Yankee's quotation for us, from Bernie Williams, that went something like this:  "It doesn't matter where you bat in this lineup 1 through 13, we'll always have men on base".  Well, Jr. finally found the right inspirational quotation as Blue came through in a shocking (THAT IS SHOCKING only to Howard Red) 15-13 victory!  My last three "Song References" came from a Classic Rock group called the EAGLES prompted by my glee and pride in a fellow Eagle who played a stellar third base and once again hit from the Book of Tinker........Guy Stull!  It has dawned on me as to why the CCR came to my mind last night.........The North River - "how I love thy laughing waters"! (That's an inside Eagle reference).
Let's hope that August has a Blue Moon and we are the "Classic Rock" guys!!!!!!!!! Who is it we play next Monday coming through "The Winners Bracket" together?

Reflections

Mythological Revenge

When Zeus caught Wind of Blue's game day strategy for today, from Aeolus, he commanded Notos to unleash his Summer rains, ergo ending our regular season.  Tournament starts Monday 8/11/14.

Harford Game Wednesday Strategy

Given CC Blue's depleted staff, I have devised a formula for success which I have named "Statute Of Liberty" (SOL), (pardon the mixed metaphor and mixed sports reference).  As Blue's manager struggles with who plays where, given our eight absentees, I propose the following lineup:  Start Our Linguistic (SOL) thespian (aka Tinker) on the mound to execute his Don Larsen impersonation while throwing to our anchored barrister (aka) R'Nealius (boot and all).  If Tinker (SOL)  pulls off his  1956 Larson impersonation it won't matter who plays where and he'll even be R'Nealius' designated runner when the Joint Deteriorated (JD) R'Nealius bats. Let's have fun tomorrow and enjoy our camaraderie!

Greenbelt

The best I can say is that we are finally home.  Greenbelt 12 and Blue 5. Greenbelt 17 and Blue 14. Plays of the day go to Freddie P's defensive prowess in RCF (JB who?).  Offensively, Guy S. has mastered Tinker's "How To Hit to the Opposite Field Manual"---nice hitting Guy!!  A reminder for Manager Jr., (nice car by the way and thanks for the ride), I have yet to be PC yet this season so when the blowout comes Monday, remember how I cherish being PC.  And an  "I told you so" to our equipment manager: Iffin' you'd secured that flak jacket for Evers he wouldn't be sporting broken ribs!  Looks as though we will be the dark horse spoilers headed into the tournament this year. Let's regroup and show Harford what we can do come Monday!  4/6/w/T

A reminder for the Blues Boys: Set your alarms for 0500 HRS as it's an early start and remember to pack your lunch and dinner.  As I survey our 2014 depleted roster, I am imagining our starting lineup to include the following players: Spinal Stenosis, Plantar Fasciitis, Fractured Ribs, Atrial Fibrillation, Navicular Fracture, Biceps Femoris Strain, Phalanx Secunda Fracture, Adductor Longus Strain, Tibia Subcu Laceration, and poor Montreal Cog Assessment (he can play all the positions). Perhaps R'Nealius is the smartest of us all while suffering on the DL with his beach umbrella attendant
It's 7/29,  yet momentous moments lie ahead. Let's buck up and finish with a flurry!

Blue Gray Ashen

Spirits were high in both dugouts at the beginning of today's doubleheader.  Several alumni were in attendance as well as our loyal Blue and Gray spouses, children and grandchildren to witness the regular season finale between the County cousins.  Let's get this over with......Gray prevailed 7-5 and 14 -6.  Blue did themselves in during game one but give credit to Gray in both games as they possess that one intrinsic asset - - speed.  I was disappointed that we, Blue, did not perform better for the sake of our DL compatriot R'Nealius who hobbled to the field to cheer us on.  Also, it was good to see former players Rod and Ray in attendance (if you read this Ray, I checked my mailbox and your blog subscription renewal check still has not arrived but I still respect you!!).  Jr. took the mound for Blue in the fourth inning and to the relief of Blue defenders he set down Gray in his final two innings with a total of 10 pitches. The highlight of my day came as we were shaking hands at the conclusion and Mike Trevaglia (sic) buzzed the field.  5/6 (Peggy, let me know if your official score book shows otherwise. And to my fellow Manchesterite [Vince]....I accept your smack talk but nonetheless I'll hit your pitchers all day long no matter what pitches you call for!!!!!).  Chance, as Blue's Equipment Manager, how about securing a QB Flak Vest for Evers as he continues to absorb hits at 3B, although as Evers acknowledged it was unintentional on Gary's part.

July 16, 2014 Lineup

Blue is guaranteed a win tomorrow with a starting lineup of "THE KING" and his court.  Although, Eddie Feigner passed away seven years ago his legend lives on as the Carroll County Sports Complex will put on a display 7/16/14 with the "Pseudo King" on the mound.  Portraying "The King" will be our affable and loveable #6.95 (Tom Henry-because there is none greater), catching will be Tinker (because he is the slowest of the team), Chance will be positioned at first base as he is one step quicker than Tinker, and Evers will anchor SS as he has two steps on Tinker and one on Chance. The batting order shows "The King" leading off (the sacrificial out) followed by Tinker (always guaranteed to hit a single) then Evers (the man was batting .800 at one point this season) and then Chance (the power hitter).  If this post doesn't intimidate the opposition I am out of psychological banter!

Red and Blue and Ocher

Surprisingly after last night's storms there was no 7 A.M. postponement call so Blue met at the appointed time at the park n ride to include Mike P.  I drove Evers and Guy to the Park; I only mention this because of our conversations on the way which will appear to be relevant later. From this picture you can see the worry , anxiety and stress we felt while awaiting to go against Red.

  It was a close call to make for the defensive gem of the day between Freddie P and Jerry B in the OF but the nod has to go to Jerry (although you can see how uptight the youngster was).  Third, fourth and fifth place defensive plays go to Evers, Chance and Tinker.  Evers recited his Georgia Tech football playing experiences where he felt he was at times a tackling dummy.  Evers ability to take a hit came into play today as he absorbed a hit tagging a base runner out at 3B and also used his scrambling QB feet to beat another runner to the bag. Chance, playing before his birthday bride, daughter and grandchildren went 2 for 3 and played an excellent first base to include a swinging tag of a runner from a SS's throw that was a tad down the line.  Tinker's dive to snag a hit up the middle still has him soaking his now Ocher colored jersey in Oxy Clean and his buff body in the jetted tub (to Mike S and Mike B--I'll give you a two-for-one laundermat deal).  In the absence of 6.95 I wish to thank him for the loan of his shoes but need to tell you Tommy that they are too tight and pinch my feet!  Post game, my bowling partner, Murph, mentioned that the FRIMUR boys helped carry the team offensively today (combined 8 for 10) which only brought to my mind, "They ain't heavy, they're our Blues Brothers".  With my impending one week hiatus, I hope that taking a week off will enable me to replicate the performance of another sabbatical brethren who rejoined us today.  How can I not mention the SPEED exhibited by our own Rev. Jim P. As for the other half of J Squared; Jr.,
ain't it great to be sitting in the Cat Bird seat devising a lineup with this group of Prima Donas.
Now: who is it we play Wednesday?   By the way, we split with Howard Red 2-12 and 9-5.

Park N Ride Carpool

Monday's meeting time is 8 a.m. which is the same as 0800 hours and 8 bells for our Navy guys.

Will someone please call Mike to remind him that meeting time is 8 a.m. as I fear that the 8 a.m. reminder penned on his hand may wear off before Monday.

Olla Podrida

As our readership is expanding given our US Mexican border posture I chose this heading to be more PC (translation is olio or Hodgepodge). If I were fluent in Spanish (or even French ala Mike Blum) y'all would be really challenged. A hand clap is given to Catonsville for the raking and manicuring of their rain soaked field to enable us to play today.  Catonsville apparently did not exhaust all of their energy in preparing the field as they over took Blue 17-6 in game one.  Blue finally found their intestinal fortitude to come back in game two for a 6-3 victory.  Blue presented an inaugural pitcher for game two and a tip of my cap, slap on the back and BRAVO to Jr. for holding Catonsville to a meager 3 runs.  Now there is another Blue story to be told: Mike P., 8:00 a.m. is the same as 0800 hours which is 8 hours past the struck of midnight.Once Evers gets the photo to me we will post the reminder again!  Now for the Olla Podrida:  Reisterstown Team won a double header today and garnered their 7th win which ties their all-time season high. The BBSSL website recap states that they unleashed their "secret offensive arsenal".  Now here's the inside scoop: CC Blue alumnus, Ray McConchie went 6 for 8 to enable Reisterstown's victory (I post this kudos acknowledgement even though Ray hasn't paid his subscription renewal to our blog site since 2010)!!!!!!
Come Monday when we travel to Howard Red we will be minus two of our middle infielders so I wish to offer to fill the shoes of ole 6.9 by returning to SS as Phyl said that I really impressed her with my HITS (there's your mention TH). 6 for 6 BABY!

Gray Day

Well Boys of Blue, we should have moved the venue 15 miles to the north to secure a historical Blue victory today.  Hosting Gray south of the Mason-Dixon resulted in a double loss 18-5 and 26-14. Let's not dwell on game one but recite our strategy for game two.  After Gray dominated game one we had positioned ourselves to take advantage of their over confidence for the second game as demonstrated by spotting them a 26-7 lead headed into the bottom of the last inning.  At that juncture our strategy appeared to be working as Gray's manager (then catching) had to request timeout to wipe the sweat from his brow and glasses while Blue was producing hit after hit.  Blue had 'em on their heels until a HIGHLY questionable call by the umpire ended the game (oh but for 13 more runs)! Kudos to Blue's Pete M for falling just one hit short of a perfect day (happened to be his hardest hit but unfortunately Gray's positioning negated his screaming line drive.
A tip of my cap to Gray who hit the gaps, sped around the bases and pulled off defensive marvels all day long.  I had children and grand children in attendance who traversed 500 miles miles to witness their first Senior Softball game.  "Impressive, speed and agility, and teams' camaraderie" were some descriptors I received" but I'm not sure if they were directed to one or both teams!  Now it's on to Catonsville for two desperately needed wins on Wednesday.

Silver Games

I rely upon my "on the scene" reporters for this post.  Apparently in game one we played as Blue of old and were victorious.  Game two result was a discouraging 7th inning loss which has become too common recently.  Allow me to remind you that if we end at the bottom of the "A" Division this season that a demotion to "B" may be forth coming.  "B" Division requires trips to Greenbelt and treks across the Bridge to Shoremen as well as having to also play our former "A" Division teams....
How Attractive is that? We gotta muscle up and right this ship!  Monday July 7th is a test of our fortitude and a sweep against Gray is really needed so sober up from the July 4th celebration and hydrate on the 5th and 6th so you're ready to go Monday!

S.O.S. (Search Our Souls)

Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their Blue Team (Typing Class 101).  Boys, we need to dig deep!  First game saw Harford victorious by a score of a gizzilion to 2.  Second game was similar to our second game on Monday as Blue held the lead through six innings and then, and then, and then, and then, and then, and then, and then, and then, and then, along came Harford's barrage defeating Blue  14-7.  Today's observations:  our own Wally Pipp witnessed flawless defensive play from his stand-ins (that'll learn ya not to get into pipe fights);
I unfortunately, at the request of management, played my tenth position of the year in the second game (on the bench), ALTHOUGH I think I played it error free; While Tinker was riding the pine he was given sage advice from "All World" Mike B which he'll heed -----"It's a long season and we need all we can muster later for the stretch run" so Tinker is placing himself on the ten day DL. Wishing Blue success against Silver next week and, in the interim, if not traded to Bowie Gold for a used rosin bag or The Shoremen for a rusty crab pot, I'll see you 7/7/14 agin' our County counterparts. 

"Too Be or Not to Be"

Today was "Too" be many Blue bloopers and blunders.  Today was not to be Blue traditional play nor to be victorious.  In the absence of four Blue infielders, one pitcher and two outfielders we played with all the heart we could muster.  Blue, not to be discouraged by our first game loss, 14-6, played with resolve and lead Harford until the sixth inning before falling 7-4.  Now, here is the question:  What are we going to do Wednesday when Harford comes to visit our home field?  I, for one, am willing to suffer the slings and arrows of today's outrageous fortune to play on and await the return of our DL and AWOL brethren!

Six, Six, Sickety Six

Well boys, it's time to start over.  Blue stuck with Howard Red through 6 innings but a total of 6 runs won't get it done as we fell in game one 11-6.  A few double plays and good pitching debut by Ivory but nonetheless only SIX runs!  Game two was a different story but the end result the same: a Blue loss 12-9. Now for the sidebar, highlights, low lights and an early Christmas wish list:  I was impressed that our New York Italian Elder felt over the weekend that he could still come out of a pipe fight unscathed (How many internal and external sutures are there Chance)?  My wish list: A batting helmet for the next time I encounter a fellow outfielder (Jim has a harder head then mine); more skate boarding pads for Evers; 800 mg analgesics for Jr. as he attempts to fill out the lineup card; prophylactic bubble wrap for the entire team;  and for my good friend, R'Nealius, comfortable orthopedic Red Cross bedroom slippers. It appears to be Deja Vu all over again as in 2013 Deja Vu all over again so maybe I should wish for a roster of 36 men all over again. I have a dear friend who can relate to my last sentence so, those of you who know, please pray for him.

11,10,9........Glen Burnie Recap

It took eleven innings for Blue to score ten runs to defeat Glen Burnie (nine) in today's opener.  Stellar pitched game by Mike S going for the complete game.  I suspicion that our infield intentionally allowed three balls to pass through their legs to setup five double plays.  As the sun returned and the humidity rose both teams seemed to be gasping a tad in game two.  With Freddie taking the mound, Blue's defense stifled the visitors.  After witnessing the impervious outfield play of Blue, Glen Burnie  (silly boys) challenged our infield only to witness four more double plays.  Once again the paid attendance was zero (nada, nil, zip)  but the comped crowd was outstanding!  Half of Minnesota's population made the trek to MD to witness their relative's performance.  Speaking of Chance, I assume you all saw that he couldn't hit my "stuff" in batting practice! Five straight now with Greenbelt coming up Wednesday (pack your over-night bag with rations to see you through).  Oh, incidentally, game two score was Blue 11 Glen Burnie 4. (Hurry back Neal or get me a scooter to cover your position:  JB -- how much do you want for that Hot Tub?) (Aside to T.H.- word for the day is reciprocity - my turn to receive a deep tissue massage, but no Ben Gay where it hurts!). Chance, as Equipment Manager, please order more bubble wrap for Evers and some plaster of Paris for Tinker.  Well wishes go out to Tim S. and "Big John" who is undergoing yet another surgery today.

Silver

I would like to take credit for today's twin bill killing as a result of my inspirational words posted on Monday's blog, but.......it took a team.  First game score of 11-4 was followed up with a nail biter, 7-6.  It took everyman today to get the job done and that was BLUE ball.  A respected teammate encouraged me to present today's summary by omitting the mention of individuals;  as hard as I strive to appease all, I must make a few mentions:  Tommy's range in snaring what appeared to be an un-catchable line drive and once again my radiant friend Evers who had another perfect day at the plate (the Man must be averaging over .800 by now). As we all have camera phones today, a special thank you to all for keeping them in check when a teammate was injured and being iced with a "Hello Kitty" ice bag; thanks Yasuko! Three game winning streak is a start.  Let's harken back to July 2009 and supersede  the glory days of 15 straight wins. Home Monday to host Glen Burnie and then the over-nighter to Greenbelt on Wednesday.  Keep it up BLUE!

Catonsville Doubleheader

First game was 16-8 and it wasn't Blue.  Resolute in our mission, after Jr's words that we weren't playing BLUE ball, we prevailed in game two 12-8.  Jr. was determined to lead by example in game two as he took the field in Left displaying his ball hawking skills and provided Blue with a round tripper.  Defensive play of the day award goes to ole Tom Henry (6.9, 6.95, #7), displaying glove work at shortstop that even impressed his predecessor. A close runner up in defensive plays was my compatriot, Evers, who snared  several hot shots.  Speaking of Mel, he must be hitting .700+ after all of his hits today. A joyous note today was that we got our ebony Ivory back from the DL. Now all we have to await is the stalling Stull to get the splint off his finger and Tim to flex and extend his head to nod that he's ready to go. And, what is the status of our "Spears Man"?  Boys, it is time to stop kissing our sister with splits and move up the leader board with doubleheader sweeps.  The consecutive winning streak continues at home Wednesday!

Harford Games

While driving over the Gunpowder Falls, enroute to our scheduled games, I received a call from our manager, Jr.  It was a dreaded time with a decision to make;  should I jump off the bridge now or take the call like a man?  Did he want to inform me that I had been returned to the minors or worse yet, been traded to Bowie Gold?  With a stiff upper lip, I answered the call informing me that our games have been re-scheduled for Monday June 23 as Harford was experiencing today's rains.  The carpool guys had been detained a few minutes awaiting the arrival of Murph, thus the delay in calling me to turn around.  Today's kudos go to my buddy Murph, as he received the award for best umbrella appearance.  Hopefully, this picture displays a likeness of the umbrella he attempted to describe to me although he did mention it was a Red, either terra cotta, magenta or another variation.

Red Day

Blue entertained the visiting Red team today and showed their hospitality by allowing Red to score 5 runs in both  the first and second innings.  Blue was not to intimidated as they mounted a dauntless comeback, keeping pace with Howard over the final five innings, but eventually succumbed 17-8.  Perhaps Blue was edgy to begin game one as there were scouts in attendance (not the kind we experienced when playing Legion, high school or college ball).  Now, in the words of Paul Harvey, here is the rest of the story:  Blue deserves drinks on Gray tonight as we have provided Gray with sole possession of first place.  Blue shut down the potent Red bats and jumped on top in game two, never to be challenged.  Game two results: BLUE 13 Red 9!  Did anyone notice the deke from Blue's
right fielder providing for a force out at 2b? (Not only a Thesaurian but also a Thespian)!  Kudos to Freddie P for garnering the win- Red has trouble with Lefties!  To Neal: a thank you for your legs once again------looking forward to tonight! To 6.9 (Tommy): way to be in the game today!  To Mike B: you're starting to earn your keep!!!!!!!!!!!!  Let's celebrate tonight as Carroll County united and keep this thing rolling. I have telepathically received a message from a Punjabi seer that envisions a Blue and Gray 2014 Championship game. P.S.  (2100 hrs):  Tonight's dinner was another success.  It was our pleasure to have Chris Oswald, Farmers and Merchants Bank and Todd Herring in attendance as our teams' sponsors.  All of you in attendance wanting to return to Park's Landing for their delicious shrimp may be disappointed in learning that they are out of stock indefinitely-----Boy can Mike B. put 'em away!

Catonsville

Under gray skies and misty weather Blue assembled on Catonsville's field with four on the IR and three AWOL. Fred was called to take the mound for both games with our depleted squad and is my plaudit recipient today.  Game one started as a pitchers duel but Blue's bats came alive in the seventh yielding a 10-5 victory.  Two bats displayed some much needed power today...Kudos Mike B and Al (hard luck befell #22 as several hot shots were where they played ya)!  Blue's hot hitting continued to start game two while garnering a 20-11 victory.  Strong infield play all around from Chance to Evers on the corners and Tinker Al & Tony in the middle.  I would be remiss if not mentioning Rookie Ray's hot bat as well.  Monday we host Howard Red hoping we have something special to celebrate that evening over dinner!  6/6

SHOCKING

Blue's manager took it upon himself to show the way for Blue today!  Game one: 5,5,5 and then coasted to a 19-14 victory over the Howard County Shockers.  With a once again depleted squad, Jr. was called to action in left field and inspired the boys with TWO home runs! Welcome back bats! Unfortunately, Mother Nature curtailed game two in the top of the first with Blue threatening again having runners on and four already plated.  Good to see Mike B returning and Guy supporting with splinted finger.  Given a full healthy roster, we are destined to be a contender for the trophy this year!

Dundalk

After we absorbed Dundalk's pregame barbs about their flight from BWI to the outbacks of Carroll County, Blue had to endure a double defeat, 11-8 and 6-3. No excuses, just facts, as Blue had four starters absent and three starters pulled up lame before this fiasco ended. Today's kudos go to our corner infielders, Hank and Guy, for stellar defensive play and to rookie Ray for a nice hit and defensive play in RF and to our middle infielders for turning three double plays.  Fans,
don't despair as our equipment manager has ordered a case of Geritol to load our anemic bats.  All we need is to regain our confidence at the plate and hire a trainer!  Let's not be shocked Wednesday when we travel to play the Howard County Shockers.  Come on guys, I spent the entire Winter scouring Roget's for new superlative words for these posts. And a P.S. to 6.9: thanks, but I won't drink the juice even if it's not purple: to JP & RNH- I'll call it when I know I can get to it: to JP-the bowed head was in pray not shame. We're Carroll County BLUE---Let's go!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blue Gray Games

I'll save my onomastics for when we get on our winning streak.  Today's words are brevity & vapid.  Gray 10 Blue 7.  Gray 8 Blue 5.  Dear Coach: let's fore-go batting practice until the first inning as we seem to exhaust our hits early on! P.S. (I can't help my verbosity):  I tip my hat to Tony for gunning out the runner at 3B and to Mel for standing his ground for the tag and to Freddie P. for his resilience in handling the laser shot on the mound! Mike Blum, where are you!

2014 Season Opener

In weather conditions reminiscent of the "dust bowl", Blue won their season opener 13-12 on Silver's home field.  Jerry B, batting lead off, started Blue's first inning with his usual line drive single which contagiously led to our hit parade and ended with #9 hitting a sacrifice fly to plate our fifth run.  Although the weather was not the best, we did experience an accomplished umpire and congenial Silver team competition.  Game two is another story as, so customarily happens, Blue found their bats go silent. The result was a loss to Silver by a score of 16-2.  The absence of three of Blue's starters hurt:  both Al & Jim would have had a field day at the plate with 40 mph winds blowing from home plate to left and Neal would have added his defensive prowess in left field to avert his sub from tweaking a groin pull (#2: "I got 'em all with the exception of the five which flew over the 12 foot high fence 260 feet away. Remember what became of Wally Pipp; better catch the next flight from Chi-Town!").  In game two, JB brought to the attention of the umpire Silver's base runner leaving early from 2nd base which, to the applaud of the umpire, resulted in an out.  Our rookies equated themselves well as follows:  First year Manger, Jr. Zepp, garnered win number one and strategically set the lineup while keeping all of us "prima donas" happy. Rookies, "odd to use that terminology on 67 to 70 years old", performed well. Guy S. is finding his batting groove while acclimating to 6'-12' pitches as opposed to 90 mph fastballs.  The M&M boys: Mike S. showed his resolve on the mound in swirling winds and Mike B (our All World Rookie) encouraged us from the bench and Ray F. contributed with his conditioned legs.  For my fear of "concrete reprisal" I have to acknowledge Hank Z's hitting, sacrificing and "Moose Skowronisk stretching" today.....Way to go Chance! And, Mel's (Evers)
defensive play and hitting, (Mel: can I continue to be your co-pilot on our road trips?).  I almost forgot to mention, Jerry B fielding a two hop line drive to RCF whereby he threw the runner out at first base.  To R'Nealius:  after this diatribe, I promise to work on more succinct recapitulations.  We also missed our perennial scorekeeper's presence (Yasuko)!  My left side compatriot, Tim S., was my guiding light today for whom I wish a rapid right quad healing!  Monday coming is a doubleheader for which we need all hands on deck (and I ain't just referring to the swabbies, JP and Murph)!

2014 Season

Our 2014 schedule is posted on the left hand side of the page....just scroll down a little. As the season unfolds, the game results will be posted on the schedule and game day recaps will be posted. I would like to encourage guest writers to submit via email their game day thoughts and if they are worthy of posting (i.e. glowing remarks of Tinker's play that day) I will share them on the blog. We have a great group of returning players and several welcomed newcomers for Blue's race for the trophy this year. With the addition of three new players, with lifetime batting averages over .760, I believe we are set. Given an anticipated roster of 22, ole Tinker is sweating a position outside of Treasurer and Blogger so please consider complimentary words during practice and games because I do possess a mercurial sardonic pen. For the newcomers, don't believe a word of 6.9's babble and go easy on Chance as he not only has thin skin but also "associates". As for the few comments when the manager alerted you to the team blog spot, let me recommend you purchase the T-E-C Dictionary to facilitate your cognition of this paleographer's colloquy. To confabulate with #6.9 is a contradistinguished enigma; to befriend Tinker might get you some good press.

2014 Season

A hail and hearty New Year wish to all for 2014! This will be our 21st year in the Baltimore Beltway Senior Softball League and with that I expect us to come of age. T'is the time to garner our first "A" Division Championship under the leadership of Jr. We will be sponsored for the 21st time by Farmers and Merchants Bank and want to provide them with our first "A" Division Championship Trophy. For the loyal followers of Blue Team's blog, I have decided to give year number six a go now that I can see again. To my followers who grow exasperated with my terminology I have secured an aid for your reading pleasure.
